Will this living situation be okay for a cat?
I live in a basement apartment. I would like to get a cat but i’m not sure if it will be fair for an animal to live in a basement. i’m here a lot of the time and there is a window. obviously, i’d have tonnes of cat toys and even a cat tower. the cat would get all of my attention when i’m home. my roomate says the cat would be welcome upstairs with the dog but only when she isn’t home (but i’m not sure if I want the cat to get used to roaming the whole house b/c it might cause later issues). do you think it would be selfish of me to have a cat live down here? Would it be best to get 2 cats for company? or should i scrap the whole idea in general? thanks for any advice

I wouldn’t let the cat roam the entire house at some points, because it’s not fair when it isn’t allowed to roam. As long as you’re not intending to get a large cat, you should be able to keep one happy, even in a small place. Perhaps go to a shelter and adopt an adult, indoor cat. That way, if you have issues with it, you would be able to return it to the shelter, rather than having to find another home, or pay a rescue fee when taking a new kitten to the shelter.
Yes! The most important thing is that you will give lots of love/attention to your new furry friend. There are so many homeless animals out there that anyone who will devote time and love to a pet should get one. Consider adopting from a shelter!
As for getting two, it depends on the temperament of the animal. Cats can be pretty solitary creatures!
O.K. Big all my life cat person here! Always have had a cat around me. My answer is.. Become a foster parent for an adoptable cat. Then you could see how it goes, and if it goes okay, get a cat. Every cats personality is a little different though! Hope I Helped!
It’s really a win lose or draw situation with cats. I would suggest getting a formerly abused cat from a shelter, they tend to be fairly mellow and happy to just lay next to you. Be careful with getting a new kitten, you never know how curious the kitten may get about the outdoors, and if that kitten wants to get out you’ll never hear the end of it.
I would adopt one from a shelter. Tell them what the situation is and they can help pick the right one. And think about it….your basement, I’m sure, is bigger than the kennel its in now, if you adopt. I wouldn’t let it roam upstairs. It should be fine just in basement, like you said with toys, lots of attention and a tower to play on. I’d get one first and see how it goes. It may be a cat that is perfectly fine to be by itself. Also, you can buy or make a shelf at the window so the cat can get some sun and watch the world go by. Hope this helps
