Possums carry a neurological disease that can cripple horses with paralysis. It can be passed to cats, which also become carriers. http://www.equisearch.com/horses_care/farm_ranch/pest_fly_control/epmexposure_041504/index.html
Feeding opossums should be illegal. It’s a bad idea.
Natural habitats are being destroyed faster and faster. I have seen dozens of roadkill the past few months, and it’s all due to habitat destruction->animals are forced from their homes–> they enter the streets, etc.. and get hit. I think we should do what we can to help the animals, but be careful how we do this.
Cats are just as bad as possms, you shouldnt feed any wild animals because it teaches them to rely on unreliable humans. You should leave wild animals alone so tht they can adapt or die out. Natural Selection.
The food is left out for first come, first serve. Probably meant for the feral cats only. Possums find it and make an easy living off it.
It probably discourages them to go out and forage naturally if being hand fed.
Who or what does not volunteer/go for a free meal ever?
Possums are native to Australia cats are not we destroy their habitat and wonder why they need to be fed, to most people that is obvious also think about what those poor homeless cats are doing to our wild life wake up and smell the withered roses.
Rabies is rarely found in smaller mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, rats, and opossums. Feeding feral cats is not going to do anything but allow more and more cats to reproduce, contributing to the pet overpopulation problem. If you really want to help feral cats, trap them, send them to the local humane society or SPCA to get neutered and adopted into homes, OR if they are too wild to adopt out, trap them, neuter them, and re-release them.
