Why does my cat poop elsewhere AFTER I clean the litter box?
My husband and I have found a pile of poop in our basement every time one of us cleans and/or changes the litter box. The cat starts using the litter box again right after that. Any ideas why or what we can do?

We do have 2 cats, but we have multiple litter boxes. Any ideas why or what we can do?

Cats are the type of animal that is territorial. The new litter won’t smell right to your cat straight away, so that could explain why he chooses to go elsewhere.
You could try putting a small amount of the old litter in with the new, changed litter (and I mean only a tiny amount, try to find some that isn’t soiled so that it doesn’t smell strongly enough for us humans to smell), which would mean your cat is more likely to recognize it as his litter box.
I had a cat like that put the litter box down there. Umm. You don’t have more than one cat using the same litter box do you? If you do than there’s your problem too
