Why does my cat keep licking one spot on the bed?
My 10 year old tom cat sometimes will wake us up in the night by incessantly licking one spot on the bed until a small spot is saturated. It is noisy and annoying. Does anyone know why he is doing this and what to do about it. Sometimes it sounds like he is sniffing at the spot repeatedly. We have washed the sheets and even bought a new bed but he continues to do this. Also, he is neutered and we have to spayed females in the house. Any ideas?????

if you know exactly where the spot is that he licks, go and buy a bitter apple spray and spray it on the spot, your cat will learn that the spot he licks is very bitter to taste and he wont want to lick it anymore. you can buy the spray at almost any pet store and works very very well. i used it for my ferrets and i love it, even though they didnt =]
I never heard of a cat doing that especially after you purchased a new bed and everything.
You must have one crazy cat.
also you are lucky to own such a unique kitty.
Dang Strange! Our cat does the same thing but only on a fleece blanket. She is a Turkish Van mix and likes to play in water as well. Look up Turkish Van and see if any of the traits match your cat’s. I was suprised to hear it difinitively described our Rainy Day Parade. (yeah, weird name, blame my wife!)
i had a dog do it in his sleep…but he sucked the sheets until there was holes
That’s strange…try putting something that doesn’t taste good on it.
Get him is own sheet. He probably likes the texture. Even a similar textured toy may do the trick. If that doesn’t work, go to a pet store and try to find a product called Nature’s Maricle Just for Cats, and clean the spot. We can wash stains, spots, fabrics, whatever, and not smell the scent anymore, but cats and dogs will still pick up the pheromones which keep drawing the back to the same spot. Nature’s Maricle will do the trick. If neither of those work, he’s just a wierd cat.
Been there. Got one. Blanket licker. The cat really wants to lick you. Only solution I can think of is when he does that, grab him and stuff him under the covers and let him lick you. I’m serious! If you pet him a lot this equal to grooming as far as a cat is concerned. Mother cats lick their kittens. Petting is a "reflex" that goes back to kitenhood. Their natural reflex is to lick in return. Munch is a pain. Worse than a dog. Licks like crazy, especially blankets. Found out that if you let the cat lick you (also a pain…rough tongue) it won’t lick the blanket. It’s really a repressed cat "love" thing. Honest! Had a Turkish Van (my son’s cat). Drove him nuts at night (scoot’s been there). Licked his head. If the cat can’t lick you to return cat-love, it will lick something close to you like a blanket. Annoying as hell. But then again, you have a cat. Some do that. That’s what some do. Fortunately we are blessed with 2 out of 3 who don’t. Then there’s Munchie.
My 1 year old tom just started doing this a couple of days ago. He has about three or four different spots that he licks and sucks on until they’re damp, or until I bat him away. I don’t get it at all!
All the spots are on the underside of the mattress, where it hangs over the base of the bed. I think he might like the texture.
