I thought most people who have cats would keep the litter box in the bathroom cuz it’s easier to clean the area, but I know sometimes it isn’t always convenient when the baths are so small and/or you have a big family, so if you must keep it in another room, I think it is a good idea to:
- first clean the whole area well with Top Job or something similar (both the floor and wall near the box as well as the outside of the box). And then when it’s dry, you could put some contact paper on the floor below where it sets and on the surrounding wall area as well because even if you have one of those enclosed boxes, the odor seeps into the floors and walls and this will both help to protect and aid in keeping some of the odor at bay. Especially if you wipe it down clean each time you change and clean the litter box itself.
Plus them paper liners may make the chore easier but I don’t think they really help as advertisers may claim and often just make it worse. Nor does a mountain of baking soda which, by the way is alot cheaper if picked up at the supermarket rather than a pet store. And besides, if it doesn’t really help to keep some simple odors from a fridge, how on earth then a pet’s amonia?
- when family and guest come for sleepover, you could keep the box in the bathroom or anywhere away from where people sleep and eat and you can remove the contact paper before they get there (giving the room a chance to air out) and replace it after they leave.
It is quite a chore keeping up with a cat’s litter box and no matter what you do, there will be their odor on fabric and clothing as well that is carried in their hair and paws, though some are worse due to diet, age, illness …so you might want to observe and keep a diary taking note if you notice a difference in your kitty’s scent when changing food and treat brands.
Good luck and ewwwww haha, have fun
p.s. don’t forget your rubber gloves
TRY A DEODERISING AGENT LIKE BAKING SODA OR IF YOUR CAT TOLERATES A SECNTED CAT LITTER TRY THAT.
Make sure you’re using clumping cat litter & clean it out more frequently.
arm and hamor baking soda. you can buy it at any pet store, try tucking the litter box in a corner someherw
Here’s what I use for my cat’s litter box: Arm & Hammer Carpet & Room Pet Fresh Odor Eliminator (with the power of baking soda.) Works wonders, takes the smell away immediately. You can buy it at the grocery store.
It needs to be cleaned once a day at least and totally emptied out and refilled with fresh litter weekly. Now, look at the food you are feeding the cat. Are you feeding fish or milk? If so stop. Find a cat food of good quality and that should help the problem.
Get a dog.
Kick out that beast
It’s supposed to smell initially right after your cat poos or pees, but the smell is supposed to go away if he covers it up. Some things you can try is using a scented litter, get a hooded litter box (so they won’t be able to smell it that bad), or use arm and hammer. Whenever I clean my kitten’s box, I have some febreeze or oust handy to give a spray. This helps cut downt he build up of smell around the box.
1. Get an automatic box
2. Try a crystalline type of litter, I am personally a fan of those
3. try different brands
Ugh. Move it to a different room:))
Also, try changing the cat’s food, and using some of the other products suggested.
If the cat goes outside…well…who knows what it’s getting into…
good cat food, good smelling clumping litter and keep it scrupulously clean. scoop it twice a day and change it out and disinfect it at least once a week. and ya know, even when you get it so clean that the cat can’t even recognize it, you will probably still have a few pain in the a$$ relatives that will complain about it. I have some like that and once I put the box behind the opened closet door so they couldn’t see it, I scooped it twice a day..no complaints for days until they walked in and caught me scooping it. then they griped about it and suddenly got sneezes and were allergic and complained to the rest of the family about the mess. I have not allowed them in my house since, the phony bastards.
just do the best you can and if the relatives don’t like it then they can jolly well pay for a motel room instead of sponging off of you.
The litter box I have is one with a cover and it also has a filter on the lid that absorbs odours you can buy them from pet shops. Also every time my cat has a poo in the box I grab some toilet paper and take it out straight away and flush down the toilet. I also clean out the litter box every second day disinfect it and put clean cat litter in it, the one I use are pellets made from recycled paper which have natural odour control.
Heres’ an easy solution that really really works. I use it for my two cats and nothing comes even close to how well this gets rid of the smell.. Go out and get a couple of the FRIDGE-IT activated carbon odor absorbers – little purple cube – not the imitations. costs $2 – $3 dollars each and just clip a couple onto litter box. Totally unscented so it actually eliminates odor rather than covering up with some nasty fragrance and totally safe to use.
I’ve used these for worst smells including litter box, spoiled fish in car and for closets, fridge etc. No spills or chemicals to worry about. You can buy these in kitchen gadget stores or just go direct which is what I do – contact them at customerservice@innofresh.com and ask for order form. You get it right away. Also saw that Starcrest Catalog now carries it on the web.
Definitely the way to go. try it.
Good luck
