My cat needs a scratching post so he won’t tear up our furniture, and I’m on a budget.
What’s the cheapest way to go?

We got one at Walmart for $10, it’s about 16" or so tall and has a little fluffy ball on top. It’s got a carpeted base and then the tower thing is wrapped in twine. The cats love it way more than the cardboard ones, which are a lot cheaper but don’t last long. They like it because they prefer to scratch a vertical surface rather than something that just sits on the floor, and they really like the ball thingy too! Plus the texture of the twiny stuff it’s wrapped in seems to really satisfy them.
Anyway, they don’t have in online but the might have it in your local store. We started out by putting catnip on it and now they don’t scratch the furniture at all, only the post.
go to walmart and find out
Try those cardboard scratch boxes – they are less than $5 and most cats love them. A scratching post is only effective if it’s tall enough for the cat to totally stretch up on – those short ones aren’t very attractive to most cats.
Cheapest one is twelve dollors go to Target way better for five and there bigger.
I made one from scraps that is much sturdier than the ones they have at the store. I got three rectangles of scrap plywood (about 12" x 12"). My husband drilled holes in 2 edges of each rectangle, and I laced them together with old shoelaces to make a triangle "house" shape (a floor on the bottom with a pointed roof). Then I covered it all with burlap (any kind of rough fabric will work, or use carpet scraps or pieces of a doormat) and stapled it down with a staple gun.
I bought one there for 30.00 and thought it was a great deal until we took it home to put it togather. the pieces were broke. Take a look at petsmart they cost more but are worth it.
