What are the best Lap Cat breeds?
Looking for a very affectionate playfull family pet
What cat breeds would be more suitable as indoor cats
I have owned cats that i have adopted from the SPCA but sadly had to give them to my family when i moved from SA
My other cats were almost always outdoors and werent very affectionate but I still love them to bits
So please help, I heard ragdolls make excellent lap cats
But are there other breeds that do too?
I know its mostly personality that makes them lap cats but some breeds are more laid back than others
I am not looking for a very hyper and vocal cat
Thanks a lot ![]()

Most longhair cats don’t really like to lay in your lap cause its too hot with the fur. Shorthair breeds that are great lap cats are Cornish or Devon Rex, Sphynx, Burmese, Siamese/Tonkinese.
All of these cats are pretty active but do like to cuddle and sleep with you. However, if you plan on letting any of these outside, don’t adopt them – they are strictly 100% indoor cats and the breeders do not want them outside. Expect to be paying at least $600+ for pet kittens of these breeds.
Mine are all shelter rescues, and are indoor only and very content. As far as breeds, it will depend on how the breeder socialized them.
But I have a couple of hand raised kittens, who are super affectionate and certainly are lap cats. Sometimes annoyingly so. So almost any kitten who was rescued as a tiny orphan and hand raised is going to be a lap kitty.
Research has proven that on aberage pedigrees are more affectionate than non-pedigrees which is no surprise when you consider that they are bred over many generations selecting for affectionate personalities.
I have owned a few breeds and the most lap cat breed I have experienced is the Singapura. We nicknamed ours lapfungus because the very moment you sat down she would be there. They are small, sweet cats. LaPerms are very affectionate too, especially UK and European bred LaPerms. In the USA where they are outcrossed to moggies they have more of a moggy disposition and can be shier and more independent. SPhynx also have a reputation for beind very needy cuddlers.
Maine Coons! Maine Coons are one of the most popular breeds in the US, and although a purebred will cost upwards of $500, you can get a Maine Coon mix at nearly any animal shelter or by looking on petfinder.com. This breed gets rather big, but they are gentle giants. In many cases Maine Coon cats act more like dogs than cats. I have had 2 of this breed and am about to get another one. Both of my previous Maine Coons love water, love to fetch, do dog tricks, and are very playful. They are playful and very loving. I will say that I have found the males to be more of the lap cat kinds. The females can be a little more independent, but my male cat never left my side. The breed is also gorgeous and rather low maintenance. They have long fur, but rather than shedding a lot, they malt in the spring and don’t shed much during the year. You would need to brush daily or shave the fur come spring, but it is worth it.
