What are some hypoallergenic cat breeds?
Hey!!!:) I was looking at ragdoll cats to buy but then I asked a different question her and people were saying that those kinds of cats are not hypoallergenic and since my dad is allergic I cant get one. So now what breed can I get that is very affectionate and loves to snuggle and is not very wild? And are ragdolls like that? Do they have that personality? And since Ragdolls are not hypoallergenic why are they so expensive? and tell if they they are hypoallergenic. Thank you!!!!!!!!:)

There are NO hypoallergenic cats, just some that shed less than the rest. They are just "less likely to provoke an allergic reaction in humans"
Try the SiberiansCornish Rex, Devon Rex, those are known to cause less of a reaction.
Tips to reduce allergies to cats
Have your cat neutered or spayed.
Washing your cat in plain water can be useful to remove the Fel d-1 from the cat’s coat.
Consult your veterinarian about products that you can bathe your cat in to help reduce the allergens
Ensure your cat does not have fleas as this causes the cat to scratch and to throw more dander into the air.
Limit your cat to certain areas of the house. Do NOT allow it in bedrooms.
Keep your cat outside for part of the time. A cat enclosure can be built to keep your cat safe outside
An air filtration system will reduce the amount of allergens circulated.
Ventilate your house. Opening windows and using exhaust fans can help increase air exchange and decrease air borne allergens.
Vacuum carpets with a HEPA equipped vacuum cleaner. This will reduce the allergens. Cat dander settles onto carpets and soft furnishings, which act as a reservoir for the allergen, releasing it back into the air when touched. Remove the carpeting, if possible
Wool attracts allergens. Try to avoid wearing it.
Reduce your other allergies. Few individuals are allergic only to cats
Keep the litter tray in a well ventilated area.
Siberian Cats are hypoallergenic…
Look for a hairless cat, a sphynx. They’re very loving and close to their owner, very calm yet they’re hairless so they have no allergies to humans. A lot of people find them ugly, but a lot of sphynx’s look completely different. It just takes some searching. They can be pricy but I’ve heard that if you get one from Mexico they’re a heck of a lot cheaper.
The cat that is the safest is usually sold at places like Target, and uses batteries.
No, there is no truly hypoallergenic cat, only cats that seem to elicit less of an allergenic response. The allergy is usually due to the dander, which is dried saliva and skin cells. There is a protein in the saliva that is the culprit. Some secrete less of that protein than others.
Any kitten that got good socialization while with its mother will be loving and affectionate. So that is not specific to any breed.
Your dad’s allergist is the person to ask to determine if simple medications will be sufficient to handle any allergies he might have.
As to why Ragdolls are expensive, it is all a matter of supply and demand, and they cost as much as some people are willing to pay.
i really hate to say it – but there is no actual "hypoallergenic" cat. some breeds are better than others for allergies, but even the hairless are not, because people are actually allergic to the dander and saliva of a cat, not the fur really. watch the show "cats 101" regularly on animal planet, they talk about it sometimes, and do your internet research. you can find a regular cheap cat that may do the trick, it does not have to be a ragdoll.
Cats are the same as dogs there is no such thing as a hypo-allergenic cat or dog. The only one that come the closest is the Sphinx or some of the other hairless breeds. But even though they are hair less they still produce saliva and dander which is what most people are allergic to. The price of a cat or dog either one has nothing to do with whether it is hypo-allergenic or not. Rag Doll cats are pedigreed so that is where the price come in at.
If you are allergic to animals ask your doctor which animal you will be able to be around instead of millions of stangers around the world who are not to realible
I believe a Siberian cat would be your best bet because they are supposedly ideal lap cats. They have a dog-like temperament and, although not being shy, are very affectionate. They are allegedly very intelligent and is very compatible with the indoors life.
Ragdolls are not hypoallergenic and they are not expensive compared to other pedigree cats.
There are four hypoallergenic breeds of cat: the LaPerm, the Devon Rex, the Cornish Rex and the Sphynx.
There are NO nonallergenic breeds of cat; hypoallergenic means lesser allergy causing. It doesn’t mean non allergy causing.
All four of those breeds are lovely affectionate cats. If buying a LaPerm only buy from a reputable breeder. In the States they should be a member of the LaPerm Society of America, affilated to the CFA. And in the UK they should be a member of the LaPerm Cat Club (Affiliated to the GCCF).
