Take a couple of felt pieces and sew catnip between them. You can look at the pet shop for ideas. Things to remember are to not put beads on the items or strings or plastic strings. Some store bought toys are not safe for cats. Just like small children, don’t design your toy that has pieces that can become loose and be swallowed. Balls can be used as toys, as long as they are too big to be swallowed. Get a box and cut holes all over it in different places. Going inside and reaching out is a great game, as well as reaching into the holes to catch something. Take a stick and put a sturdy cord tied onto it , then tie feathers on the other end of the cord. The cat will jump at the feathers as you dip it through the air. Any thing that imitates any real life prey action will attract the cat’s attention. The best store toy is the catnip filled furry mouse they sell for about a dollar. My cats love them. They roll, chew and carry them around. Some of my females even talk to them as they carry them like a kitten baby.
My cats like to tear up paper or a plastic pill bottle with a small rock inside or a piece of string with a feather on it?
Mt cats’ favourite toy is a ball made from rolling up roasting foil into a ball. That keeps the two of them busy for hours.
When i was bored once, i made my kitten a little toy with a fish. All i did was get a straw (or you could just get a stick) and some string, tie the string onto the straw then i made a little paper fish and tied the string to a whole on the fishes back. My kitten loved it and its one of his favourite toys
well my cats love hairties so i ties a shoe string on a hair tie and they love it
At Halloween the Dollar store has these little plastic pumpkins that have air inside as decorations. I get the pack – about 12 and give 1 every 3 months to the cat to bat around the house, if they get stepped on – they get flattened and the cats no longer interested. I don’t know how well they work on carpet but on floors they slide really easy and the cat chases them and bats them and throws them in the air – really funny to watch.
I like the marble inside the prescription bottle. I try to find a big marble (SHOOTER) so if for some reason the top comes off (never when i’m trying to get a pill out) the marble is too big for a cat to swallow.
Crinkled up news paper or the cellophane wrap that you usually find around gift baskets – can be purchased at a craft store and a portion cut off as needed – the amount you need to buy will last almost as long as the pumpkins do.
Feathers & cat treats on a string or a wand. But, my absolute favorite one is to take a baby sock and just tie a knot in it and give it to kittens. A child’s sock for 3 months up to 9 months and an adult sock for adult cats. You can always add a little cat nip to entice them. I have some cats that aren’t interested in cat nip and some that are – so I do one with and one without.
Cats are like children – no good at picking up their toys but always wanting just one when your busy picking up the room at the end of he day. I got a small box that is no more than 7 " high and about 9"long and depth is whatever it is that I need to hold all their toys. I have some cats that wait for others to pick a toy for the day and others that can’t wait to get to the toy box in the morning. I didn’t decorate mine – but a friend decorated hers with pretties and stuff. She used the reverse side of a shopping bag and wrapped the box (except at the opening) and taped it all down, then she glued things to it and wrote cat toy box. I worried about my cats playing with the things that were glued or just being in a mood and tearing them off.
Big Mouth my 2 year old male prefers the store catnip toy to anything I make. I went on Ebay and purchased a entire box of the little mice for $2.75 with shipping at $7.00 so for $9.75 I got 53 mice – this works out to .18 cents and they run 2 for $1.00 at Wal Mart. These have lasted him almost 2 years!
Here is a place to get all handmade stuff ideas and some I have Incorporated into my own over the years with variations and some I haven’t used at all. The most important thing about a toy is to be sure it doesn’t have any small things that the cat could swallow if it gets torn apart or falls apart, The second most important is if your cat doesn’t enjoy such a thing why are you taking the time to make it?
