Ahh i am sure i will have the usual "if your so worried about furniture then dont get a cat" posts, but i am hoping to just get some honest answers here..And for the record since i got some hate mail after asking my bay window question, i would NEVER declaw a cat..I am just looking for some answers to some questions and some solutions to some things from people who have the same issues…

I have owned cats before and never had a problem with them clawing at the rug..I recently had an older cat which i was taking care of and he seemed to love my rugs in the bathroom not to scratch on, just do that nesting motion with his paws…

I have Berber carpets in my home and i realized its the same material as scratching posts..For those of you with berber carpets, do your cats seem attracted to your floor to use as a scatching post?
Our home was just put with new carpeting when we moved in. We have pergo flooring throughout the home and just the 2 bedrooms and part of the living room has carpeting…I was just curious if cats are attracted to using the berber carpet as a scratchign post…
Also, for any reason has your cat scratched up your lamianate flooring?

What's a safe height to drop a cat?

My dog has a problem with my cat and chases it. I built a high perch for my cat in the living room. He has no problems climbing on top, but he can’t get down. Twice I came back from work to find my cat meowing helplessly atop the perch (basically a pillar with a platform at the top). I need to teach the cat to jump from heights, and I plan to drop him from somewhere. What’s a safe height?

I treated my upstairs bedrooms with Raid- House and garden spray since we have been over run with Spiders as of late. I did everything right. I closed off both rooms, baracaded my 4 cats in the downstairs living room, sprayed the room entirely, opened windows, put fans on, and let it sit for about an hour and a half. The bottle advised me to let it sit for 15 min, but with my animals, i decided to let it go a lot longer to ensure proper drying and ventilating. Well, everything was ok. I the animal poison control line and talked to a lady to make sure it wouldnt harm my cats and she said as long as it was dry things would be ok. My fear right now is, Dahlia- our 4 year old (special) cat LOVES to lick plastic bags at night. I think its comforting to her.I was sleeping last night and woke to her licking a bag that I realized later on was in the room when I sprayed the room. Im fearing that she may have ingested it, if it hit the bag. She doesnt seem sick, but should I be worried?
She is eatting normally, and drinking normally. I dont see any changes in her behavior. She is kind of a loner, so her crawling in weird areas to nap isnt unlike her. Im just worried, shes my baby.

Getting cat urine out of a scratching post?

While cleaning, I noticed that one of my little terrors (AKA cats) decided it would be cool to pee on the scratching post.

I guess I could attribute this to the fact that we rearranged the living room and added a new recliner. Cats are in good health, we have three litter boxes around the house – which are scooped daily – and only two cats.

So, I took the scratching post outside, well, it’s more of a kitty condo thing, put vinegar on the corner where which ever cat peed and left it in the sun to let the smell dissipate.

Should I do something different? What is a good enzymatic cleaner you would recommend to make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Can my dog and Cat ever get along?

I adopted a Cat several days ago from our local SPCA. I also have a three year old Miniature American Eskimo. The Eski is not rough with the cat, and just tries to give him a good sniff. The cat however, does not approve. The Cat will Hiss and growl…He hasn’t lunged at the dog or anything, but I do want them to get along. Both of them are Males. The dog is Neutered, and the Cat has an appointment to be neutered on Friday. Any help? I tried introducing them by putting the cat in a carrier and then taking him out and letting the dog sniff the empty carrier..That didn’t work!
The cat is actually pretty tolerant of the dog, the cat is VERY laid back. He was just laying on the bedroom floor playing with a toy mouse, and the dog came up and gave him a big sniff, Waffles allowed it too! The dog then got bored and went back out to the living room to be with the rest of the family. I’m just so glad they aren’t ripping eachother apart. I think they will adjust pretty well, the cat is used to being around other animals, because at the shelter I had got him from, they have this huge sort of gym room the cats go in at adoption times (12-4) So he’s used to other animals. I think things will be great.

Is this well/ or decently written?

(Its a short story called the, "Riddle troll")

“Are you sure you’ll be okay, staying here alone?” Grandmother Vanessa asked me, worry written all over her face as she stopped at the front door. “I’ll be fine, grandma,” I reassured her. “Of ‘course he will!” Grandfather Albert boomed from behind me, clapping me so hard that I nearly stumbled from my perch on the steps as he strode to the front door. “Well, okay…,” Grandmother Vanessa said uncertainly. “But remember, if you get hungry there’s left-overs in the fridge. We’ll be back later on tonight so don’t stay up late watching cartoons!” Grandmother Vanessa gave me a quick, tight hug while Grandfather Albert ruffled my hair roughly. Then, their good-byes said, they departed out into the night. Hearing the door shut, I dashed down the stairs, peering out the living room window as the old Volkswagen rumbled down the gravel road that leading out of the farm and disappearing into the night. Once it was gone, I sat down on the over-stuffed couch in the living room, staring silently at the empty room. Grandma and grandpa had said that they were going to some sort of “party” for old people. At first, I had died-out laughing, thinking of a bunch of old people square dancing to some cheesy country music. I thought it would be cool to have the whole house to myself. But, sitting there all alone with only the silence for company, I suddenly wished Grandpa and Grandma were here instead of some party. After a bit of personal “to-do” thinking, I decided to grab some left-overs and watch some TV to pass the time. I ate my mashed potatoes and chicken in front of the television and watched cartoons until I was too sleepy to keep my eyes open. But, as I dragged myself into the guest room and onto my bed, I got kind of freaked out when the realization dawned on me. I was in my grand parent’s old farm house with tons of miles between me and civilization. I was all alone. Suddenly, as I sat staring at the ceiling, a gray paw shot up right next to my face. I let out a yelp, almost rolling off the bed. I let out a shaky sigh of relief when our old, grey tom cat, Merlin, peeked his face above the folds of the covers. His intelligent yellow eyes looked my face up and down the hopped onto the bed right next to me, rubbing his soft body against me and purring loudly. Sometimes I thought there was more to this old tom cat. Something about his eye told me so. I know this sounds funny, but sometimes when he meows, I think he’s literally talking. I don’t know if it was the soft purring of Merlin’s voice in my ear or the soft pat, pat of the sudden rain, but soon enough, I had drifted into a dreamless sleep. At first when I had woken up I didn’t know why I had woken up. Merlin was looking around the room, his ears perked up in a silent look of caution. The room seemed surprisingly cold, despite that it was in June. “What’s wrong, merl?” I asked, picking him up. But Merlin, with a small growl, pulled away irritably, his ears pinned down. Rain was still pouring outside, splattering against the window in bursts. But there was another noise; the sound of something sharp scraping down a window. I leaped off my bed-almost falling on the floor- then listened, straining my ears to catch the noise. It came again, sounding from my grandparent’s room across the hallway. My heart was racing impossibly fast as I slowly stalked across the hall, followed by a cautious Merlin. I opened the door, and then screamed. Or, that was what I was intending to do. My throat seemed to constrict in fear, stopping my scream short. A monster glared through the slits of the shades on the window, it’s yellow, beady eyes glowing sinisterly. It had a long, pointed nose, almost as distorted as its gnarled fingers that pried and pulled at the lock on the window. Bushy, black eyebrows hung over its evil eyes, and it’s tangled, thin strands of hair hung limply around its grotesque face. Then, with a screech of glass-against-metal, the window rolled up, letting in a volley of rain that pelted me and Merlin. Merlin let out a hiss and took off out the door, leaving me with the hulking monster. I flicked on the lights. The monster shuffled away from the window, but it could still be seen, standing in a puddle of muck. “What are you?” I yelled over the scream of the wind, but to my annoyance, my voice quavered. “Troll,” was its hissing reply.
I had no idea what a troll was. No clue at all. “The lights will burn out,” the troll said with a voice full of whispers. “And then I will come in.” “I’ll turn on another light,” I said, just as a line of lighting boomed in the distance, the light glowing off from the silhouette of the troll. “In a storm like this, your light could die. Anything could happen.” That soft, persuasive voice made me shudder. It was true. But I didn’t say anything. I didn’t do anything. “Let’s play a game while we wait,” the troll said. “I’ll tell you a riddle, and then you tell me one.” “What happens if I
Its a little "lengthy", but I really hope someone reads it through. :)
It didn’t fit it all in, but just tell me what you think about some of it.

I have a 2 year old cat, and we got another dog a few months ago. He was very interested in the cat and would often eat her ‘droppings’. We got him to stop doing that, but she now refuses to use her litterbox, she goes in the same corner in the living room all the time. Putting the litter box there is not an option, is there a way to get her back into the litter box? She’s ruined the carpet there, and my mom wants to get rid of her. Help!?!

What do you think of this story?

Ariel, my cat, has two good eyes, four working legs and has never thrown herself into the path of a rattlesnake to save my life. There is, in fact, nothing extraordinary about her. Or so I thought.

In a household of ten pets, she has only distinguished herself by her relationship with my blue-and-gold macaw, Pongo. It has always surprised me that my cats, who regularly chase birds outside, have always kept their distance from him. Perhaps it’s because macaws are so large and intimidating, but I like to think the cats know that "Mommy’s bird" is off-limits.

Ariel, however, has a special fascination with Pongo. She sits at the base of his cage and looks up at him as though he were a god. In a way, he is. Food falls from his perch into Ariel’s waiting mouth – cheese, chicken, whatever I feed him. I don’t know whether it’s the usual bird messiness or if Pongo is actually sharing his meals. Sometimes, Ariel will even stand on her hind legs and reach up into the cage with her paw. Although Pongo screams if any of the other cats do that, he accepts it from Ariel.

Once when I was leaving on a vacation, I arranged for Pongo to spend two weeks at First Flight, a local bird store that accepted boarders. I always used a large cat carrier to transport him outside the house. He’d managed to chew some large holes in it, but it still served its purpose. I put the carrier on the kitchen counter and went into the living room to get Pongo. He walked readily into his carrier (his only pet trick); I latched the door and carried it to the car, placing it on the front passenger seat.

On the half-hour trip to First Flight, Pongo peered around, chewed a little on the plastic and held onto my finger with his claw. No squawks, no complaints.

We entered the bird store, and I put the carrier down on the counter. When I opened the door, Pongo walked out – a little quicker than usual, I noticed.

We settled him in his cage, and I picked up the carrier to leave. It was still heavy. How could that be?

I looked in and saw Ariel peering out at me. She had obviously climbed in before we left the house and traveled the fifteen miles in the carrier with Pongo. Neither had made a sound during the entire journey. Packed in together, neither had bitten or clawed – not a single feather or drop of blood was shed. Who would have believed it? No one in the bird store did.

In a world filled with warring nations, these natural enemies had forged a relationship that defied the odds. If birds and cats can get along, maybe there’s hope for the rest of the world.
