What is the best kind of scratching post for cats?
I just bought a 1-1/2 yr old cat the other day and he’s been clawing at my carpet and ripping it out next to my sons room.
Today I was going to buy a scratching post, but there are different kinds. Which do cats prefer?
1.) All carpet ( straight post )
2.) All carpet ( kitty condo )
3.) Carpet on parts, rope wrapped around other parts
4.) Other (please explain)

I really want a kitty, but I want a Finnish breed. A short hair. Something that would be good for a new home and teenager.
Any suggestions? even if its not Finnish, I would perfer if it was.

My cat knows better but when he’s flying through the house, he stops to sharpen his claws on my new sofa. I pick him up and take him to his post and gently take his paws and extract his claws and make them scratch the post. then I pet him lovingly and tell him what a good kitty he is. Well why isn’t this working? He knows what he’s doing is wrong because when I hear him clawing and I walk over to him he takes off and hides and won’t let me catch him. He’s not an evil cat like some i’ve seen that you can actually imagine them laughing as their doing this. He’s a very, very affectionate cat and that’s the only bad thing he does! I’ve even tried putting catnip on the post and he just lays their and sniffs it! Any good tips???

Hi,
I live with my very sweet 3, almost 4 year old cat. I adopted her when she was 2, and she is really attached to me. She is shy around other people, but when it is just me or my boyfriend around, she will sit really close and purr, perch herself in my lap, and sleep in my bed. I am planning on doing a study abroad program from mid january until the end of may. I will not be able to return home and visit her during that time. I plan to leave her at my aunt’s house, where she will be the only pet, as she is now. I was wondering how I can expect for her to behave both initially when i leave her at my aunt’s and when i get home, when i take her back to live with me again. Thanks!!
It is kind of difficult for me to bring my cat for a visit with my aunt prior to leaving her there, as i live about an hour away from her, and the trip requires a train ride. My kitty currently lives just with me, but at my aunt’s house she would have my aunt (who is really excited to have her), my uncle and my 16 year old cousin living with her. My boyfriend watched the cat while i was away over the summer for about 3 weeks, but he stayed at my house with her. I asked him how long it took for her to warm up to him, and he said about a week and a half, but she was in a familiar environment.

Sometimes when I least expect it, my kitty will tackle my leg or try to trip me on my way down the stairs, and one time, he left a stinky little surprise on my pillow while I was sleeping. I think he hates me.
Doesn’t he realize that if he puts me in the hospital, no one will be there to feed him?

It is a girl and has a white belly. Her big sis name is Marley. She is 12 weeks old.
Sara S is the winner! She loved the name Izzy! That’s the name of the new kitty. I would pick you for best answer but it wont let me yet, so tomorrow-you get 10 pts. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

My kitty used to play with toys when she was younger; but now that she’s older she’s losing interest. She seems pretty bored and we can’t adopt another cat right now. I’m at school all day and my grandmother doesn’t have to energy to play with an energetic cat. What are some toys that I could give her that DON’T INVOLVE TREATS? (She’s getting pretty chubby and doesn’t need any more treats)

My cat is about 8 years old and has never used a scratching post. We have two sisel posts and 2 cardboard floor scratchers throughout our home. Our young cat loves all these scratching posts and uses them all the time. The older one though won’t go near them.
She doesn’t like cat nip, so sprinkling cat nip on the posts or near them doesn’t work. She perfers our 0 rug to scratch on but doesn’t do it every day, so catching her with a squirt bottle is difficult. Putting the posts near/on the rug doesn’t help because she won’t use the scratching posts. We’ve tried those soft paws on her a couple times and they are a disaster - they don’t fall off and kitty ends up at the vet’s office to have them cut out of her pad that they’ve grown into. Cat deterent spray that you buy at pet stores doesn’t work either.
In our old apartment I put down old floor mats from a car and she scratched on those, but they were ugly - don’t really want those in my house.
Maybe a cheap but pretty rug from Ikea for kitty to scratch and some citrus spray to deter her from the nice rug is the solution?
Any thoughts?

I am hoping to adopt a 2 1/2 year old lynx point siamese this weekend and introduce her into a home with a 6 year old siamese and a 6 year old dog. The dog is great with other animals, the cat is better with other dogs but ok with other cats after a while. They have been together since they were 10 weeks old. The kitty I’m hoping to introduce seems a bit traumatized and was separated from her littermate after they were taken to the rescue. She has no expereicne with dogs.
