neighbors lets cats roam, attracting feral cats?

Where I live there is no rule about cats not being allowed to roam outside. My new neighbors across the street let their unspayed females out every day and it’s been attracting a lot of feral cats to our street. I’ve had far too many near accidents with a stray cat or my neighbor’s cat on the road. The feral cats are disgusting and are known to have fleas, ticks, and internal parasites. They poop everywhere on my yard so I’m afraid my yard might is becoming contaminated with worms. My dogs hate the cats, because they lounge on my front porch and the males "spray" on our yard. The cats scream and meow all night and get into the trash all the time.

I’ve already talked to my neighbors about their cats, but they won’t change their minds about it and believe cats should be allowed to roam. There is no form of animal control where I live. Is there any way I can get rid of all these feral cats without hurting them or without the help of my neighbor who has caused all this trouble?

Feral cats have to go NOW?

For some reason, my neighborhood is thoroughly run over with feral cats…none of them are friendly…and even hiss at you from time to time if you get to close. Our household has a real outdoor cat, whom we bring inside at night since he’s gotten very old. Unfortunately though he doesn’t always show up at night, and several times we have had to take him to the vet from serious injuries and bites he has gotten. He stay around the house and is fixed so we know any cat fights that he gets into aren’t his fault, plus he’s old so he really doesn’t want anything to do with other cats. However, since we feed him outdoors when he is hungry we have attracted some unwanted feral cats and one of them is noticably pregnant….I feel extremely bad for them, but after my mom and i found out that the cats helped themselves to our beautiful koi fish in our pond….that even had a net on it…they are going one way or another now….i have a very angry brother and he is less accomadating than myself…and i’m afraid if i can’t catch them, then he will shoot them instead….can anyone explain to me how i can catch these cats??? i’ve tried numerous times to conact animal control in my area and it hasn’t worked….
I would prefer to catch the female cat that is pregnant and give her kittens to someone who needs them…but if i don’t catch the mom they will just become wild as well…we really have a huge problem because there is several neighborhood cats that come around as well…and our solution starting today is not to put any more food out, and just bring our cat in when he wants to eat…
our outdoor cat…is an outdoor cat…because he doesn’t want to be indoors…he likes being outside…so if he gets beaten up by some feral cats..then the feral cats are the problem not him

Confused about feral cats?

I just adopted a 4 month old kitten from someone who found her outside somewhere. She seems clean, clean ears, soft coat – and the person who found that cat took her to the vet for shots/spay and then gave me. He made a comment that the cat may be feral since she was found outside. I didnt think much of it until I got home to do research about caring for my new cat that a website said this:

"A feral cat is a free-roaming outdoor cat that has never been socialized around humans. Most feral cats live in bonded groups or colonies. They gather where they can find shelter and a reliable food source. As they have always lived outside they cannot be tamed and cannot be adopted into homes."

I noticed she growls whenever I touch her and I didnt know a cat could do that. However, Im a bit concerned now because if the above is true – that means the kitten and I will never bond. How can you tell a feral cat?

stray/feral cats in danger of being killed?

There is NO tnr groups in my area. NONE I have been looking for years. I’ve been TNRing on my own and frequently have to move ferals to my parents farm because Animal control will get a bug up their ass and decide they need to come around and try trapping my
VACCINATED
EAR TIPPED
SPAY/NEUTERED
HEALTHY FERAL CATS.

I am not irresponsible about this. I even chip these cats so if AC does get one without my knowledge I can go bust the cat out before they kill it.

I know the law. I am within my rights to TNR and feed these cats.

But there is an uncontrolled group of feral cats near me. I just heard about them today. A vet says they have a severe herpies infection, none of the cats are altered or vaccinated. It’s so bad people are finding dead kittens and cats in the area.

I know ultimatly something has to happen- totally aware of that. You cannot allow cats to breed like this and since they’re sick as well- action is needed.

A "private" contractor has been contacted to trap these cats. The park manager (it’s a trailer park) is not saying what will happen to these cats once trapped.

I have contact Ally cat allies and the closest group near me (3 hours away) that TNRs.

Is there any other organizations that you know of that maybe able to help?

I’m writing and calling and faxing everyone I can think of. Government officials, the owners of the park, the news, I want to find out who this private contractor is and what he’s going to do. And if they do plan on killing them, I want to try to get the public interested in TNRing them instead.
Quad Cities in IL
I don’t have the funds nor the resources to start on my own. I have two feral kittens I caught about 2weeks ago and all my extra money is going to them. It’s not cheap and I have a poorly paying job lol

Adopting Barn (feral) cats, pros and cons?

So my local shelter relocates feral (barn) cats, to people who have barns/farms. What are the pros and cons of me getting some for my 48 acre ranch (barn is right next to my house)? They spay and neuter them, tell me everything I need to know, give me free cat food for a year (a pet store donates it), and they keep them in a "cat condominium", for a few weeks until they are use to their surroundings. I have had feral cat colonies in the past (at my other houses), so I know everything I need to know. Like if I see a new cat, I need to get it spayed and neutered right away, and I need to give my cats a rabies vaccinations. I am also getting them feline leukemia vaccinations, and all the other (so many) vaccinations you would get for house cats (hey, I want these feral cats, to live as long a possible)… Also in the winter, they will live only in the heated barn. There are no animals currently in the barn. During the summer, however, they will be allowed to roam. My other colonies that I had on 1 acre lots, never really left my yard. They are feral, so I can’t keep the cooped up like house cats. On my farm, I have 3 female horses and 1 cow. No dogs. Also all my neighbors have them… Not kidding, ALL OF THEM. I have talked to them about it. I have small rat problem, but I mostly want the cats to have a new home.

I post this question once in a while just to see what people say. NO ONE ever defends the song birds, the chipmunks, lizards, etc. They always take the cat’s side. I don’t get it.

People who perpetuate these feral colonies say they are animal lovers but one Feral cat will murder 1,000s of birds, lizards, butterflies, you name it in it’s lifetime. They have wiped out whole eco systems and song bird populations in places like Hawaii and Australia. No song birds, just yeeeeeeooooowwwww.

Feral cat people say capture, sterilize and put back. That keeps other feral cats from moving in. This is one of the weirdest twists of logic I have ever heard of. If the other cats cant move in they don’t just disappear, they go somewhere else, where someone is NOT taking care of them and kill everything they can get their hands on. www.duh.com ?? So all you are doing by keeping a colony of neutered cats in one place is forcing other cats to move somewhere else.

Some people say “It’s nature”, it’s like a coyote killing a rabbit, cats have to live too. It’s not nature it’s human’s complete lack of respect for nature by throwing the cats out into nature in the first place, about like throwing a Mc Donald’s bag out of the car. It’s the same thing, they are both human litter. What a great coincidence!!! Cat’s have LITTERS of kittens. There is no difference between the paper bags, and beer cans that people throw out, and the kitty litter that people throw out. They are both trash that needs to be removed. Why do we hate litter so much? Because it is not natural, it is not what was here 5,000 years ago before white people came here. What if an alien space ship landed here and dropped of a few million 20 foot tall, armor plated, tiger like carnivores that were impervious to any method that we try to use to kill them. And then they ran around every where eating women and children. Sometimes they just grab a kid and toss him up in the air, and step on it, and etc, etc, and then just walk off and don’t even eat it.

I can hear it already “Women and children are different” BUT the people sustaining these feral colonies are ANIMAL lovers. What about all the animals who die an agonizing death at the hands of the feral cats? The animals who were here for tens of thousands of years before white folks brought cats here from Europe.

I say capture, put to sleep in a humane fashion, wait for more cats to move in, and repeat.

And how about we freeze the cats, and send them off to Darfur where they can be used to feed starving people. How weird and codependent is that? We have people starving all over the world, and we have animal lovers here in America dedicating endless hours of their time and money to keep wild cats alive so that they can eat about 500 times their body weight in wild animals over the course of their lifetime. It makes a lot more sense than burying them or burning them up which is the alternative. People in Darfur have no prejudice against protein like Americans do. They just want to eat.
More important things to get worked up about. THAT’s MY POINT. Why are people taking all their time and $$ to save wild cats, when they should be taking care of and rescuing PEOPLE!!

Which would mean felis domesticus are all one species and have same genetic code?
Very scientific explanation, obviously
by a student or a degreed scientist.
This is what I wanted and why I did
not ask if a tiger and a lion cannot mate. Sounds like time for more fun and games in the evolution arguments.
Interbreed is what the man said, my
error. As far as saying that different species of wild cats, that’s what my question is. It may have happened over hundreds of thousands of years. Cats are in the order Felidae.
Lion is of the species Panthera.
Then there are subspecies of wild or feral cats.
Thanks for indulging me on this topic.
I don’t think I need anymore answers.

killing feral cats, your opinion?

Hi all, I have a controversial issue to ask you folks.

I was born and raised up in another country which is far more different than the U.S.A thus before you animal fans throwing negative comments about my action please read my post thoroughly and carefuly.

I was born in a small town in Egypt where almost every family keeping at least 1~2 cats for hunting rats. My grandparents treated them good and as a child I love my two house cats very much.

However, at my town there’s problems, we have feral (wild) cats roaming almost everywhere, these cats are very wild in terms of temperament and will attack human and our chicken. Not only they create huge feces and lice problem, but also these beasts attacked my beloved house cats and caused one of my cats lost its legs, and caused our female house cat pregnant for every mating season.

my town people always view them as vermin, and exterminating effort is strong ever. These feral cats are very resilient and hunting them involved even children such as me. I once killed a ferocious feral cats by burry it.

The problem now lies here, after 20 years spent at my hometown, I settle in Seattle and working at a Hi-tech company, but after I told my colleagues about my childhood stories, almost every1 of them looked at me as if I was some animal abuser… they now somehow kept distance from me (maybe due to my ethnicity?) But heck, I love cats, and still own a 5 year old tabby.

It seems that whenever people heard the word "cat", the only image poped up in their mind is their beloved childhood docile one, not realizing there’s another form of cat—- feral, which is a beast, ferocious and full of aggression.

What’s your opinions of my childhood action? I thought I did a grand job helping clear the feral problem and protect my house cats.
forgot to mention something, as someone advocate trap-Neuter-Return, I know it sounds very humane. However, back in the 80′s I doubt there’s any Vet in Egypt (I even doubt its existence nowadays…), and our house cats are semi free roaming ones, getting pregnant is somewhat inevitable.

One more thing to give away, my grandma simply threw the kitten born to the female cat into dumpsters since we can’t afford more than 2 cats… I don’t think her action was very cruel, coz almost everyone else is doing this. I suppose I might have to keep this part a secret since my colleagues would never accept such practice.
I might have to add more info into this:

My town was rather poor in terms of American’s standard, and even the house cats were not kept as pets. They were working animals targeting rid of rodents which is a MAJOR nuisance at our town.

My grandparents couldn’t even afford additional foods providing for cats, and they have to rely on their own to feed themselves, mostly by eating house rats and sand rats, and that’s why they must be free roaming.

The feral (wild) cats are in very close proximity to human dwelling, living under dumpsters ready to hissing&scratching at anyone getting close to them. feces, fleas and not to mention the constant fighting they have, either amongst themselves, or with other house cats. My house male cat was bitten very deeply by a feral at the leg and led to a very bad infection eventually his whole leg was mummified (No vet), and eventually replaced by another cat.

If you ever lived under that circumstance, you would probably understand why.
