from my personal experience, my two cats both preferred scratching the bottom of the couch, so if they don’t like it, i don’t think there is anything you can do, but try taping catnip to it and see what happens
Try rubbing some catnip on it
Dunno about the cat post, but my old cat used to love scratching an old piece of carpet. If your catpost hasn’t got carpet, maybe tie some around.
you can try to put cat nip on it
Go the pet store and get some Catnip, put it all over that and I bet he will use it. There is spray you can put on areas of your house you don’t want him to scratch, it is safe and you can find it at Petsmart. Like on furniture or rugs. If the catnip doesn’t work, then give it some time as your cat may be sensitive to how it smells.
try rubbing some catnip on it regularly. If you are trying to keep them from scratching furniture, place the post near the furniture so they can make a choice. My cats have the "smartykat super scratcher". Basically it is made of cardboard and has catnip on it. They prefer to scratch IT, and not my couch. i paid about $6 for it at the grocery store in the pet section but they may have them at pet stores also. Its so simple and worth the $6.
I learned a long time ago that most cats won’t have anything to do with anything you’ve spent money on. I used to buy cat toys – I’d bring them home, and the cat would spend hours playing with the bag or the receipt…wouldn’t go near the toy, though. Good luck with the catnip idea, that may work for your cat – mine won’t touch it. Damn cat, good thing I’m crazy about her!
if he/she starts to scratch the furniture or something that you don’t want him/her to scratch than at that moment put him on the scratching post the cat will get it in about a week
Get him some fresh catnip, take a few leaves mash them between your fingers and place them on and around the post. When he starts scratching on your furniture just use a stern voice No. Pick him up and put him in front of the post. When you see him going to the post by him self you should give him a verbal praise, Good kitty. It works.
Hang some dangling toys off it. That way the cat will associate the cat post with playtime. It worked for me. GOOD LUCK
Maybe he does not like it. My cat is the same but he loves sharpening his claws on my best chairs. Try covering the post with foam rubber and recover it with some material and he may go for that as it will a bit softer.
