My cat just hangs her butt in the cat box she won’t go in. Why does she do this?
She use to be a normal cat go in the box, do her business and cover. Now she just hangs her butt in imagine her bottom sticking out the hole of the bx with her body hanging over. Often times she misses completely and I have quite a mess. I also have another cat who use the same box, just goes in to the back doe shis business and jumps out. No covering so I end up with a huge clump of litter in the front and cat poop in the back. I tried changing litter, I found the one they like. I tried using two boxes, but the male goes in both so it didn’t seem to matter for the female who hangs. Someone help it’s getting quite bad.

You need to empty the litter and clean the box itself. There’s a chance there’s a bacteria growing on the box that the cat can smell and doesn’t want to get near.
The fact that the other cat doesn’t cover his droppings also indicates a problem with the box.
If it was me I’d buy a new box and throw the old one out.
Before you put the new box down make sure the entire area it sits on is cleaned and free of bacteria. But don’t use harsh chemicals or they won’t go near it. Just hot water and dish soap. Scrub it and allow it to dry completely. Then put down the box and fill with new litter.
It sounds like your cat does not like the litter box.Try getting a larger box with a lid on it. Sprinkle in lots of baking soda, just in case there are odors that she doesn’t like, too. The lid will at least help with the over-the-side messes. Sometimes it helps to put a towel over the box, also. The cats think they are getting added privacy. Silly…but it worked for me! Good luck!!
I have had this happen before.. I am guessing she is being difficult. I would invest in a covered lid that has a door on it. I also would continue to try different litter. I use arm and hammer litter.. it looks like crushed up bird food. I have 6 cats and it works. It does clump up and it takes 2 weeks until i have to change it.. yeah 6 cats and two weeks. that’s really good… for you maybe a month to 6 weeks. When a cat has bathroom issues.. usually its a sign of infection.. may consider going to a vet for a check up. Again… personal experience.
Most answers have touched upon changing the litter and the boxes, but a cat suddenly changing their habits could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. Most older cats who are used to using a box will suddenly change the way they use the box or abandon the use of the box because when there is painful urination they begin to associate the litter box with that pain and try to invent a way that isn’t painful. Take her to the vet and have her checked just to be sure it isn’t a problem or there is also a litter that is made of old recycled news paper and is really soft. The only problem is that it doesn’t have any odor protection and so keep up the clean! Check out the links that I put in the source section they might help out!
if i’m understanding correctly, could the cat be constipated?
Even though you’ve tried changing the litter, it still sounds like they aren’t keen on it. If one cat refuses to walk on it, and they are not covering their mess with it, it would indicate they don’t like how it feels on their paws. You haven’t said what type of litter you’re using, but generally, the finer the grains, the more the cats seem to like it. Pellets, crystals & larger grain clay litters are too coarse for some cats, who like the feeling of either sand or very find clay litters. Give them a try. Once you’ve put the new litter in the tray, place the cats in so they can feel it under their paws. Also, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you to make sure the litter box is cleaned out regularly of course.
Hope that helps.
Cats are funny some do not like using the same box as others. If you have 3 cats you may want to invest in another cat box. You should also keep them very clean. I know I like a clean toilet. Your cat may not like the cover the smells linger with no place to escape.
I think you should ask a vet. Maybe one is shy and doesn’t want to do it where the other does it. Keep both the litter boxes apart and away from each other. Doesn’t help? Ask the vet
change the litter type and clean it regularly, if it’s in vain, buy another litter and try it, but leave the other one there
