If you mean pedigreed cats then according to TICA (The International Cat Association) for 2009 it was the Bengal:
"After steady registrations of cats and litters, the Bengal was crowned TICA’s most popular cat during 2009 with 6,264 cats and 4,489 litters registered. Coming in second was the Ragdoll with 3,829 cats and 2,974 litters registered, while in third place the Maine Coon had 2,088 cats and 785 litters registered.
Rounding out the Top Ten most popular breeds were:
Sphynx – 1,107 Cats, 681 Litters
Siberian – 819 Cats, 563 Litters
NFoundation Savannah – 580 Cats, 454 Litters
Persian – 579 Cats, 252 Litters
Norwegian Forest – 560 Cats, 234 Litters
British Shorthair – 517 Cats, 195 Litters
Abyssinian – 342 Cats, 213 Litters"
If by most popular you mean what do more people have then that would be cats of no particular breed as "domestics" make up over 97% of all cats on the entire planet.
edit: Sandra – that list is from seven years ago!
Mixed breeds or ‘mutts’. Tabby cats are very common, and Siamese cats are very popular.
This has the top ten with pictures and descriptions.

Deffinitly Tabby Cats.
I think Persian is still at the top with some insane number of registrations. but most US Persian breeders register in CFA so that’s why the breed does not show up higher on TICA’s list that CMV posted. Same is true for US Siamese breeders which is I think 4th in CFA but not so high in TICA.
Conversely, the top cat in TICA is the Bengal which CFA does not even register (they don’t allow " wild blood")
Maine Coons and Ragdolls are high in both associations.
Recent order for CFA (this is I think 2009)
Persian
Exotic
Maine Coon
Siamese
Abyssinian
Ragdoll
Sphynx
American Shorthair
Birman
Oriental
In the UK, the top registering body, the GCCF, lists the top 10 as:
British Shorthair
Siamese
Ragdoll
Maine Coon
Bengal
Persian
Burmese
Birman
Oriental Shorthair
Exotic Shorthair
And here is an article with a chart with numbers that are not extremely recent (it’s from 2004) but interesting since it lists in one place registration numbers by breed for CFA, TICA and GCCF http://www.pandecats.com/x/breed-registrations2005.shtml
Of course all of these breeds plus the other breeds of pedigreed cats only equal about 3 per cent of cats. So the MOST popular cats are those who are not any breed.
