Is it normal for a dog to eat cat crap out of the cat litter box?
My friends Shitzu (sp??) eat’s the crap out of her cat’s litter box all the time. That can’t be healthy! Does anyone know?

I agree, it couldnt be healthy, kinda like when I go McDonalds, this dog knows he’s eatin crap, but keeps going back for more
hehe, I hope it is because my dog does it too, we try to stop him but he gets it sometimes, it IS disgusting!
my dog does
Ya, most untrained dogs like to eat poop.
mine does…..gross….no doggie kisses
Some dogs love that stuff, I call it Kitty Rocca. She should put the box somewhere so that the cat can get to it but not the dog……
YES
Yes, all naughty little dogs do this. If your friend cares about her dog she should put the litter box in a ‘safe place’ !!
my dog used to do that.
tell your friend to move the litter box to were the dog can’t get it (but make sure the cat can reach it).
Some species of animals do this because feces actually contain a lot of undigested nutrients. Its normal for dogs to do this, but that doesn’t mean your friend should allow it. I’m sure the dog could be trained or the litter box moved to somewhere the dog can’t get to.
Both of my dogs do it, and I have three cats. Ick, it’s really gross, but I guess that it does something for them because otherwise they wouldn’t eat it.
It sure is! We keep our litter box in the laundry room with a gate across it so the dogs aren’t snacking. They don’t seem to grow out of it either! It won’t hurt them unless your cat is ill, but most ‘bugs’ that affect cats aren’t the same ‘bugs’ that affect cats.
Yes, it’s perfectly normal. I echo others’ sentiments on here that your friend should find a place where the cat can get to it but the dog can’t.
Dogs just love litter box morsels.
There’s really no way to stop them from doing that.
Dogs will eat their own poop as well as anyone elses. Some are worse about this than others. Unfortunatly your friends Shih tzu could contract coccidia bacteria and get very, very sick. So she should do what ever possible to stop this behavior. The good news is, mostly puppies and young dogs are the worst about this. As my dogs matured, this wasn’t as much a problem. Tell you friend to stop this behavior because coccidiosis is nothing to fool around with. It attacks the digestive tract and, if untreated, could kill her dog. Good question, by the way!
Little Doggies who eat kitty turds, can get tape worms.Thats only if your cats have them..Dogs somehow love to eat it..Its not a good doggie treat, and quite frankly, disgusting..They must be lacking something in order to eat this piece of stuff…I catch my dogs occasionally snacking on these little nuggets….Just try and keep your litter pan up off the floor and away from your dog….
My 2 GSDs do it, I’m gradually replacing the litter trays with covered ones but maybe that’s not such a good idea as the other day one got his head stuck when he heard me and he tried to do a runner !! ( what a mess !!) At least the cat wasn’t in there at the time though.
Yes, as disgusting as it may sound it is normal. And it isn’t something they grow out of either, puppy or adult they will do it. The reason it to them it actually tastes good. It is like a treat. When a cat digests its food some ingredients are not absorbed into the cats body and these smells or tastes are somehow pleasing to dogs.
YES, unfortunately & disgustingly, it is—they LOVE IT! That’s "Doggie Tootsie Roles" to them. Try to move the litter box to somewhere that kitty can still get in, but the dog can’t—they’ll ALL do it. Good luck with this
