Is it just me or does it seem like there's only one cat breed while you can think of a thousand dog breeds?

Dogs are much more genetically diverse than cats. That is why so many different breeds could be developed from common ancestors.
Hi there…actually there are approximately over 39 breeds of cats recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association: http://www.cfainc.org/breeds.html
Some more breeds already mentioned, but recognized by other cat associations (hybrid cats notably–bottom of page):

Although not as many as dog breeds, quite a few different cat breeds are noted.
it’s just you.
There are many, many, many breeds of cats. While dogs come in different shapes and sizes, cats are pretty much all the same shape and size, with variations mostly in fur color, length, and texture.
There ARE more dog breeds than cat breeds. Dogs are more popular and so are dog shows so pple are more familiar with all the dog breeds. There are a lot of cat breeds though, if you take the time to look them up. A few off the top of my head are: American Curl (or fold? lol), Abyssinian, Persian, Exotic, some Russian one lol
there are tons of cat breeds but i think breed focus is only contributing to the over population problem. please people adopt shelter cats. and get your cats neutered even if they are pure breeds. do an online search for cat breeds and you will see that there are a bunch. but i think anyone who really cares about cats is not concerned with breeds. rather they will adopt a cat who needs a home. breeds are like fashion trends and cats are not handbags.
One breed of cat????? I think you are confused. There are, I think, close to 100 individual breeds of cats …..there are close to 400 canine breeds.
I am going to list off breeds of cats I can think of right off the top of my head. I am not looking at any lists or anything, and none of my cats are purebred.
Russian Blue
Siamese
Manx
Maine Coon
Persian
Oriental
American Shorthair
British Shorthair
Scottish Fold
Most of the "mutt" cats you see every day are Domestic shorthair or Domestic Longhair.
i know of about 28 breeds, but im more cat person than dogs
