Most kitty condos are made with heavy guage Sono Tubes covered with outdoor carpeting and non-toxic glue (I prefer not to use staples). Supports are wood with rope wrapped around them. I usually go to pet stores for inspiration and create off those ideas.
For scratching areas, make sure the unit has a good base or tacked to the wall. Bedding can be the synthetic wool you pick up at a mega-mart with a fabric department.

Not quite sure how to ans this.
I used two 1"x3" and placed a [ ] frame between them that had canvas steched (not tight) in it. (so it was like a hammock) Then wrapped the boards with sisal rope… which my cats LOVE to scratch!
I attached the boards to a base with L brackets which really kept it secure. Worked great. ( so a bed on top using L brackets would work)
