How to find out if a Cat is purebred?

Several years ago my family adopted a cat from the pound. He was a great cat, and unfortunately died several years ago. However when researching cat breeds I found that this cat had all the physical features and temperaments of a Maine Coon. But since we had gotten him from the pound there was no way to see if he was purebred or not.
So I was wondering, is there anyway to find out if a cat is a purebred or not when you can’t access its family history? Or is that the only way?

family history is one another is a DNA test but that would be very expensive.
but if it looks exatly like one then it is most likley was one.
My cat, Fred was from the pound I got him at 8 weeks old and my vet said he was a Maine Coon. Since he was from the pound there was no way to trace his ancestory and find out if he was a purebred. Its all about the papertrail.
But they have to be the most fun cats in the world! The breeders call them ‘fur people’ because of the personality they have…
We had Fred for 17-1/2 years he just passed this past June he probably was the greatest cat we ever had no cat will ever take his place. We still weep when talking about him. I never had an animal cremated. but Fred sits in a little cedar box on the window sill where he took in the sun each day.
You should take a look at how often your kitten gets sick. If the case is frequent, then it could be a purebred.
Look at the general image of a purebred cat on the internet and look at yours. If the patterns are alike, yes, totally different no. If they’re between, chances are, it could’ve been bred with that breed.
It could be a main coon or be a main coon cross or both parents be main coon crosses. Their are tons of cats that may turn out looking like a pure breed but just lucked out in the gene pool. The only real way is to track the cat with appropriate papers that the pound probably would not have.
People are ALWAYS on here saying they think their cat is a Maine Coon! Maine Coons look like most any Domestic Longhair ( AKA mixed breed) cat – but, they are very, very big. And purebred cats are much more rare, expensive & therefore kept protected inside homes, not getting out to breed with strays, like dogs do. 99.9% chance your cat has not a drop of Maine Coon in it. There are no such things as DNA tests to prove it, either. Vets often nod & ‘agree’ with people that insist their cat (or dog) is a ‘found purebred’ or ’1/2 something’ just to please them, FYI. No vet wants to insult their (paying) client. My advice is: adopt another Domestic Longhair from the pound – save a life & enjoy its company, and the total mystery of it’s background!
