How do you litter box train a kitten and how hard is it?
My husband and I recently moved into a new house and it seems the previous owners left behind the family pet. The cat has been living on our roof and she apparently has kittens with her. We found them in the backyard on Friday (after she kicked ‘em off the roof). We’ve claimed one as our own and the neighbors have claimed the others. Soo….
How hard is it to litter box train a kitten. I’d say he’s probably 9 weeks old. He’s definitely been weened (if that’s what you call it). We have him in the laundry room right now because I don’t want him to ruin my carpet. So how do I do it and how long does it normally take??
Thanks for all the smart answers! I should’ve clarified that we do let him out of the laundry room, when we’re awake/at home. My husband likes to play with him more than I do! Anyways, yes I’m definitely sure he is a HE.

Training a cat to use the litter box is actually quite easy. For the most part, the cat will as if by instinct use the litter box. Mishaps are usually avoidable but if they do occur you will usually be able to clear them up within a few weeks. Some of the avoidable mistakes that will only encourage mishaps are letting the litter box getting too full and dirty. The litter box doesn’t have to be kept immaculet, but you have to keep it clean or the kitten won’t want to use it. If kitty doesn’t want to use the litter box he or she will simply find another place, increasing the likelihood of leaving you an unpleasant surprise!
I’d say that if you start young you will have no problem! This is what I suggest: At first, when your cat is a kitten, put him in a small room, preferably a tiled one like a laundry room or bathroom. The kitten can be left in this room with the door shut.at night when you’re sleeping or times when you’re away from home. Hook kitty up with somewhere to sleep, plenty of food and water, and the open litter box – I usually put it in a corner. Using a room like this will help reinforce kitty’s use of the litter box; it simplifies things so that there are fewer choices, it will be alot easier for him to make the ‘right’ one!
Don’t forget that kittens and cats will reject dirty litter boxes so be sure to keep the litter box very clean during this training period. DO NOT PUNISH YOUR CAT!!! (Cat’s don’t "work" that way!) If you do, you will only be teaching your cat not to do it in front of you. Instead, reinforce the cat’s good behavior by rewarding the animal when the litter box is used. You can reward your kitty with a cuddle or a kiss or even a treat. I use those little ‘Whiska’ treats but there are a gazillion different treats and toys for cats and kittens.
you dont have to train them show him where thelitter is keep it in the laundry room since thats where you have kept him kittens automaticly know to use the litter just show it to him/her and they will do the rest
Its not that bad actually…well…I guess all cats are different. My kitten never had an accident. But I kept her in a big box for 2 weeks and only kept her by me at all times when I took her out of the box. then we took a piece of her poop and put it in the litter box and let her smell it. She picked it up fast. Some cats spray, and my sisters cat pees everywhere!
Try placing him in the litter tray as he is doing his business or just after. If you do this during make sure you give him alot of praise and even a treat to let him know it was the right thing to do. you will see in a few weeks that he will start doing this himself and eventually you will have a fully toilet trained kitty. make sure the litter tray is clean and in easy access.
You need to have a pair of eyes and that’s enough. what am i going to tell you was first, prepare a litter box and place it where those kittens can see it clearly. then, when you see your kittens looks like they wanna poop, quickly grab ‘em and put it into the litter box. keep this going until suddenly you see your kiteen started to litter in the box.i usually do that and it always works. just try. if it dont have any improvement, see the verterinary.
First, you need to kid-proof your house as if you had a 3 year-old. Then it will be safe for cats. Kittens usually train themselves, but if the kitten is real small you can make a little ramp for him to get up into the litterbox. I wouldn’t be very fastidious about cleaning it at first. If he smells it there, it will attract him and tell him "this is the place". I’d also set the kitten up in a small room and visit him frequently so he gets to know you. Later on I’d put him back in the small room when I’m asleep and when I’m gone. Small places are usually comforting to a cat and they sleep alot so I don’t think you have to worry about putting it in a small room. Be sure to leave a night light for kitty because they can’t see in complete darkness.
Sometimes it is easier to passively prevent problems by only having the cat "out" when you’re able to talk to him.
Get everything you need. A box and a sack of send for litter box. Usually, you don’t have to train them – they just start using it.
It’s pretty easy, really. Cats instinctively want to bury their stuff, so introduce the kitten to the box on a regular basis, and he should pick it up without any trouble. He’d probably like a little more space, so when you’re free to watch him, let him out with you and bring the box along. Put him on the litter a couple times an hour and he should get the hint pretty quick.
If you’re sure he’s a he, you might want to get him neutered so he doesn’t spray. Check with your vet to see when the right time to do it is, because if it’s done too early, sometimes the growth plates in their bones don’t grow together properly and male kitties can break bones.
all we did with all my cats/kittens that we’ve had over the years is put them in the litter box and move their paw back and forth (like it was covering up his mess) and that’s it. cats are sooo easy to litter train! though i did have one male cat that peed ALLLLL over the house. i don’t think he would have done that if he was neutered though. i think some male cats spray all over the place tryna mark their territory maybe if they’re not fixed so you might wanna do that…
I placed my kittens in the litter box and moved their paws to show them the digging movement. They learned within 2 days.
it can take just a couple of weeks you need cat litter and a tray each time the kitten squats put him in the tray he will try to get out but be insistant,,when he does preform in the tray make a fuss of him,,,it should work very quickly but always leave a clean litter tray in the room he sleeps in good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,
