Soft Claws!!
If he likes the rug, can you maybe find something similar to put on the scratching post? You can also try sprinkling the scratching post with catnip. Each time he uses the rug, move him to the post and run his paws down it. When he does scratch on the post, praise him and give him a treat.
buy a spray bottle and fill it with water and spray him when ever he does what you dont like then he will know its bad my cats do that they will just do it when your not around lol
WHOOP THAT A-S-S!
Soft claws are the best!! They may still scratch but they can’t hurt the rug.
Get them here at the link listed. They are currently on sale and there is no charge for shipping. A must have product if you don’t want to declaw.

Fill a Spray bottle with water, when you catch your cat scratching the rug sternly tell him no and give him a squirt with the bottle. will take a few times, but cats are very smart and do get it.
i had my cat declawed at the age of 8 (she was clawing at a few childrens faces) she is now 13 and will still act as though she is clawing the carpet.
probably the only way to stop it is to consistantly punish the cat while she is doing it.
Soft claws are a pain in the butt! Before you do that, try this:
If it’s only in one spot, put double sided tape down on the spots where they scratch. They don’t like the sticky-ness on their paws and eventually, they should stop. If that doesn’t work, get one of those clear plastic floor mats (the kind that you put under a computer chair to help when it rolls and it has the grips at the bottom) and cut it to fit the spot where they cat is scratching…they can’t scratch at something if they can’t get to it. Eventually, he should stop. I neither of those work, try the soft claws, but they’re a big pain!
I have 3 cats and they all prefer different types of scratching posts. So it might be that you have to try the different kinds (carpet, rope, one with cat-nip) until you find the one that you cat likes. Also if you make the scratching post a fun time for your cat, like give him/her treats around it, add toys to it like a mouse on a string, it might improve the cat’s desire to actually use it. Also, I haven’t tried this, but I had heard that cats don’t like citrus odors…so you could try a lemon-scented spray or a potpourri of lemon and orange peels to make his/her former scratching sites less attractive. Also, its a good idea to have multiple scratching posts, and not shove them some place out of the way, but have them easily accessible.
It is not that bad to take off their front paws. It is bad to take off their back ones.
You can trim the cat’s nails using a clipper. Also, you could try a different type of scratching post…some cats like carpeted ones, others like the ones with rops and there are some cats that like the throw away cardboard scrathing things.
