It works but it makes the room smell kinda musty. I talked with someone at the pet store and they suggested orange peels. Apparently cats aren't big on the whole citris thing, so I tried spraying a really srtong citris air fresshener on the tree and it seemed to work. The only prooblem with that is the smell fades after awhile. We are thinking of using a plug in air freshener with a citris smell near the tree. Hoping it will work! Good luck to you! NERF guns don't hurt but make loud popping sounds. The darts or balls, once again, won't hurt but will scare the crap out of them after hearing the sound. When cats have wanted to climb, we made a "skirt" out of the rubbery green lattice which you can buy in Nurseries. You can cut it with strong scissors. So - cut a disc which sits about the second spread of branches up, slice across the radius in one place and hook this around the tree, cutting out a small disc to accommodate the trunk. Support with green garden wire in several places around the perimeter to the trunk of the tree - similar to a chandelier. Wish I could draw it for you. We have a hook in the ceiling to which we tie the tree.

Maybe put a few drops on some cotton balls and place it around the perimeter of the tree. It might work, but cats really love trees.
