How can I train my cat to sleep in his own bed?
I have a nine year old male cat who has recently begun to shed more than usual. I no longer want him on the bed so we have set up a bed for him using a basket with one of his favorite blankets from the bed. Unfortunately he refuses to use it and I cannot figure out how to train him. Is it too late to train him to stay off my bed?
I’ve tried the reward idea. I have even gone so far as to put fresh catnip from my garden in his bed and he’s just not having it.

When the cat jumps up onto the bed, pick him up right away and place in the basket.
Do this for a while, so he’ll realize he can’t go on the bed.
If needed, you might also want to award him with cat treats to help him stay in the basket.
Lock him in the shower for a few nights with nothing but his bed to sleep in, be sure to put his cat littler box and a small bowl of water there too, if you think this is too cruel or if he meows all nt. then of course don’t do that, otherwise, I don’t know, cats are not real trainable, they have a mind of their own, have you never heard the saying, "You do not own a cat, they own you."
