Put sticky tape on things you don’t want him to scratch. Every time he starts to scratch, calmy go pick him up, take him to his scratching post and rake his front claws down it (gently!) so he gets the idea that is where he is supposed to do that.
Some cats are just picky about their scratching posts. Some like cardboard, some hate it. Some like a carpeted post, some don’t. Some cats seem to like the ones covered with sisal rope, and I’ve hardly ever met a cat who didn’t love an actual chunk of log as a scratching post. You might have to try different ones to see what appeals to him.
You could try sprinkling a bit of catnip on it if he’s reluctant to use it. If he does use it, tell him what a good boy he is, and how proud you are of him. He might not let on, but he likes to be praised, too.
Please don’t have him declawed. That is cruel beyond words. If all your efforts fail, you just have a stubborn cat. My boy is a hard-head, too. Must be a male thing!
There is an alternative! You can put Soft Claws on him. You can get these at some pet stores and your vet’s office. They are rubber caps that go over the tips of his nails. They don’t interfere with retracting his claws, and will save your furniture. They attach to his claws with something like nail glue, and fall off on their own after 6-8 weeks. At that time, you trim his nails and reapply them. If you aren’t sure about applying them, a vet tech can show you how. It’s not hard, and so much kinder than declawing. Please give them a try, if you can’t get him trained to a post. Good luck!
i trained my cat to a scratching post by spraying cat nip spray on it, which is easy to find in a petstore. he got trained to it pretty quickly, but then again he was just a small kitten at the time and hadn’t discovered the joys of ripping up furniture yet.
cats hate vinegar…try spraying some on the rugs and steps. might even wanna hit the furniture with it so she dont start there. good luck
Ok I always answer like this and people usually go mad. I ask: what the hell carpet/flooring have you got that you can notice a cat scratching it? It must be the cheapest @ss flooring in the whole world!!! I mean floors are made to be walked on…so how can a cat harm a fricking floor???
Plus: before I pull my cats claws out, I will change every bit of furniture I have in my house and buy the most durable cat furniture I can find. Cats have feeling…FUNITURE DOESN;T.
Also: it;s FURNITURE…WHO CARES. I have antiques in my house…I have leather sofas, I still wouldn;t care if my cat wasn’t so well behaved and used his scratching post.
I CARE MORE ABOUT MY CAT THAN MY FURNITURE!!!! DOESN;T EVERYONE???
!!!!
