How can I get my cat to stop eating catnip?
I have an 8 month old cat and he’s perfectly healthy. The only thing he eats is Purina for cats and cat treats. I recently bought some catnip and put it on his cat bed, then he started eating it. He’s never eaten the catnip before and he’d already eaten his food. Sometimes at night, he jumps on the counter top I have just for his supplies and gets in the catnip container which is opened like a step-on trashcan. Why is he eating it? Is normal for cats to do this? Can it effect his health? Please help.

The only way to make him stop eating the catnip is to put it where he can’t get it. You don’t really need to worry about him overdosing on catnip because it’s more of an herb than a drug, however, if the cat eats a ridiculous amount of catnip every day, it might affect his nutrition.
It is completely normal for a cat to like CATnip. Catnip is just a plant dried and crushed to be eaten by cats. It is not a normal food for cats, and is supposed to be like a treat sometimes. It is usually put in toys so cats can play with them. It will not affect his health, but I do suggest you keep it in a high shelf or cabinet and make sure that it is closed at all times unless your letting him eat it or using the catnip for something.
It’s normal for cats to eat catnip. Some cats roll in it, jump at it, etc. Catnip won’t harm your cat at all. It won’t affect his health and it’s perfectly safe.
Yes thats completely normal and not very unhealthy at all. Catnip is a plant that cats love. They love the smell and the way it tastes so its not unnatural for cats to jump up on counters and eat it. I suggest putting it in a cabinet or putting it in a bag and sealing it shut. Give your kitty catnip about once a day or the effect will wear off. My kitty goes to great lengths to get her bag of catnip too, they know where it is by using there scent. Good luck!
it wont hurt to eat it,if u dont want him to you can just clean the bed off and dont put anymore on it. i put cat nip in an old sock and knot the sock at the opening and give it to my cats, its cheaper then buying a toy for the catnip and u will have use for that old non matching sock!
there’s nothing wrong with eating catnip, but if you’re worried then get him some cat grass instead to satisfy that need. all my cats eat catnip, and they’re fine for it.
"It’s believed that cats eat grassy vegetation because it’s nature way of supplying cats with the necessary vitamin folic acid that is lacking from their primarily carnivorous (all meat) diet. It also help them cough up unhealthy fur balls."
we keep our catnip in the fridge b/c it’s the only place my two cats can’t get into, but do they ever come running when they hear that little baggy crinkle
get some special bad smell from the pet shop and spray it on the catnip then she won’t eat it because it smells bad. he might be getting a grow spurt and hungryier. Ring the vet and ask. If t is cat food then it won’t affect his health. it is normal for all animals if they are more hungrier and are scavingers.Ring the vet to be sure
I hope i helped.
But though still a mystery, the substance that attracts cats has been isolated. It’s a volatile turpenoid, and has a specific chemical name: nepetalactone. Nepetalactone is not attractive to all cats; only about 30 to 70 percent of cats are actually attracted to it. But when it works, it really works, appearing to drive cats wild with excitement.
First off, I want to let you know that catnip is not a drug; its a perennial herb and a member of the mint family. Cats have a natural attraction to this plant that can result in a mood altering affect. Your cat can become highly active and silly, completely mellow, or she may have no change at all. Your cat may sniff, roll in, or eat catnip. It is perfectly safe and your cat does not have to stop eating catnip.
It is perfectly healthy and normal for cats to eat catnip. This probably means that you are getting a good grade of catnip, as the reason why you don’t see more cats eating catnip is because it is older and dried. But even if this is the case, it’s perfectly fine for your cat to eat catnip.
Intervention!! Pets Anonymous is all you can hope for. He is clearly hooked on the junk..get him to detox asap…lol..I have no idea if catnip is toxic but I think it is funny that he is jonesing for the ‘nip’. Try moving the catnip so he can’t get to it.
