How can I convince my parents to get me a kitten?
I have a female cat named Gina. I don’t know her age but she is not a kitten. She seems like a young adult cat. Just recently I went to Pet-Co to buy her a brush because she is a stray. So I convince my parents to let me buy it, but she wont let me brush her because she is not used to it.( I got this cat about 2 months and a half-ago) so any ways, I was at Pet-Co and I saw this adorable cat for adoption! His name was Kiko, male, tabby kitten,3 months old, who was sprayed and had all vaccinations. My parents are 54(my mom) and 51(my dad) and they are OLD COOTS! They have no patience and are hard headed and stubborn when I try to explain something to them. So, I ask them if I can keep my stray(Gina) and Kiko. They say no and get mad at me for trying to reason with them. I also wanted both of them to be trained in a litter box and be house cats. Then my mom says no, start yelling at me, and she tells me that that’s gross and it takes too much work. I don’t understand! I told her I would take care of it, I will clean it, throw it out, buy new sand, and all that but still no. I will buy the cat towers for them to play on, food, love, and play with them every chance I have available. Since they said no, I thought about maybe giving away Gina to my friend who wants a cat. So I can give Gina a home, and Kiko a home. I feel bad for leaving Gina because she is an awesome cat but my parents are just too stubborn. How do I convince them to let me have at least Kiko, or both?
Ive tried telling them. As soon as I try telling them the facts they say "I don’t want to hear it" and leave. I try to speak to them but they just tell me to leave them alone. I can’t wait to get the hell out of my house. I CANT DO ANYTHING!!!!

Unfortunately, there really isn’t a good argument for getting a cat unless you have a rat problem. At least not to those who are set against it. I mean there’s the companionship, the love, the entertainment, the calming effect (to name a few), that a cat can bring into a home. But if you are trying to convince people who aren’t animal/cat people, all that means nothing to them. They won’t see it. It’s good that you have taken responsibility for a stray. Be thankful they are allowing you that.
Most people I know who don’t care for cats or are indifferent to them, were converted once they were really exposed to them. Right now, Gina needs a home more than Kiko (if he was being shown at Pet Co he’s living in a foster home until adopted). Maybe as your parents slowly get to know Gina, they may become converted too. And trust me, if that time comes, there will be another adorable kitten that needs adopting.
BTW, your parents may be COOTS, but they’re not that old. And age has nothing to do with their patience, hard headedness or stubbornness. It’s just a lack of understanding what an animal can bring into your home and heart.
I would first start off by telling them that if you can handle one cat, you can handle two. plus gina would absolutley love a new friend to hang out with. explain to them how important it is for cats to socialize, and that you could take care of them. and when it comes to the litter box, its really easy to clean that house cats live way longer when they are inside cats. hope it helped
How old are you?
If you are under 16 or 18 yrs old you shouldn’t be trying to convince your parents of anything…you’re a lil young to take on sole responsilbility of a cat..yes that’s right its ten times more work than a child. anyone who don’t believe me ain’t looking after their cat properly.
besides it’s your parents house and you’re too young to move out.
on the other hand if you’re over those ages then…and i assume you have a job or else how would you pay for these cats? ask your parents why they don’t think you’re responsible enough. did you have previous pets that you kinda neglected?
do they think you’re a lil immature and when the new kiten thrill wears off you’ll leave them to do the work?
maybe read up all you can on cats and get so much research/info so they see you serious. work out a budget plan of how much weekly you spend of your own cash not theirs paying for food, toys, boarding fees if you go away on holiday, litter, etc etc
but first you need to find out why they don’t want a cat maybe they just don’t like cats then if thats the case…you could always wait til you get your own place.
but seriously you should only be taking on responsibility for these cats if you are old enough cause until then your a minor and what they say goes really period!
Tell them you love them
You’ll probably have a hard time convincing your parents if they are completely set against it, but the best way to try is probably to appeal to both their emotions and logic.
First, figure out some other things you can do that take responsibility and make a plan to do them. Tell your parents you are going to prove that you are responsible by doing A,B,C.. for a month or two, then do it. Write it all out so you can come back later and show them that you did what you said you would.
Next- tell all their friends and your grandparents and aunts and uncles how you’ve decided that you want to show your responsibility to your folks so that they might possibly reconsider letting you have a kitten. Explain how you know it is an uphill battle but you have hope that your parents might allow it after you’ve proven yourself.
This will get all of them on your side- so they will be asking your folks how you are doing with the responsibility thing. If your parents say "great" then they might start asking and putting social pressure on your folks to relent and let you have a cat.
It may not work, but in the end you will also have developed more responsibility and be completely prepared to take care of a kitten once you are out of the house. Plus, your parents will have to deal with looking like mean parents in front of all their friends and family, too.
If you want to be around animals and your parents absolutely wont change their minds, consider volunteering at a local animal shelter. I did that in high school and it was a great experience- it makes a huge difference in the lives of a lot of animals that have no one to love them and help them.
it depends on how good at listening they are if they dont want to litsen then i would wait till they have no choice but to listen
