Home made cat toys – cheese on a string?
Have any of you tried this? I got a bamboo BBQ skewer thing and attached some string to it (not the one where the fibers come off easily, they’re dangerous) so I can attach a bit of cheddar to the end and let my cat chase it.
What are some more good ideas for homemade cat toys?
Pie – can’t I use the whole mouse, or does it have to be just the tail? And which of my cat’s eyes do I shove it in? I’m so confused ![]()

my cat is insane for crumpled paper balls. honestly, i can’t crumple paper unless i intend to give it to him.
laser pen
That is such a cute toy you thought of. My cat loveeeesss laser pens!!! He can try to catch it for hours. It is very hilarious!!! Or you can get some ribbon and have the cat chase it!
Roll aluminum foil up into a ball. They’ll bat it around for hours. Cats also love plain brown paper bags. Poke a hole in one corner of the end and set it on the floor…they go absolutely nuts.
My cats love scrunched paper to!
I think that’s a good idea, but to much cheese can make your kitty a bit sicky.
So you could use something else to tie to the string, I often use a cork, a feather, a pom pom or just some ribbon.
Obviously I watch at all times.
You could add some catnip to, they LOVE it!
My cats are crazy for Q-tips (which of course you must be careful with, as the "cotton" can come off), hair ties (NOT rubber bands), milk rings (from when you open a gallon of milk – omg they LOVE THESE), and those little triangle things that come in pizza boxes (little white stands to keep the cheese from sticking).
Crumpled paper or a brown paper bag works too. They love the sound.
I have also seen something that made a friend’s cat go INSANE. It was essentially a piece of not too stiff wire (a little more pliable than a wire hanger) with bits of cardboard at one end that you could attach to almost anything and the cat would grab at the cardboard ends and it would spring around.
Cheese on a string will not work. You can learn knit things for him/her like mice and things. I was reading over some of the other answers, and do NOT do the lazer pen thing, it will make your cat addicted, and try to catch it. It will make his claws get caught in your carpet, and make him pull it right out, leaving a wounded and seriousely hurt cat. And it will also try to catch other lights like sunlight streaks and reflections from a mirror in the sun. Also the classic string really entertains them, and is only cents for each!
A wadded up clean coffee filter works great. Light in weight, easy to swat around and carry.
And don’t forget cardboard boxes, or paper sacks (with the handles cut off, of course).
A small cardboard box will provide hours of play opportunities, and if you have two cats, it can become a fort for one of them.
Milk jug ring, open paper grocery bag, anything that skitters and makes noise when batted around the floor- beer bottle caps work well. Shiny stuff on string, like strips cut from a mylar balloon and tied tight. Have fun!
my cat loves feathers tied on a string….very cheap and alot of fun…
Whip cream caps. My cat loved batting them around the house. Light and easy for her to carry in her mouth. Also there were times I threw the cap and she would chase after it.
laser pen & yarn lol
