Flying with five cats…how?
We have five cats and will be PCSing from GA to AK in about 18 months. I am a planner I have always been a planner. I am most worried about my cats. We have five. I can not find what I consider a suitable carrier for the cats to each have one. What I mean is one that is basically enclosed, like some larger kennels and has a shelf that they can perch on or hide under a blanket if they wish. I have already planned to put puppy pee pads and a gerbil water thing for them but I really want them to have a comfort like a perch and possibly a scratching pad. All the products I can find off of google are geared towards dogs.
Guess what I am asking is for a site or somewhere I can get something that is not made for a dog.
Delta lets you have as many animals as you want in the pressurized cargo hold and I saw some comfort controlled ones with heat settings but I am scared of fires
I meant not*
for the record AK is ALASKA as in Fairbanks, AK nor Arkansas

I have never heard of a cat carrier that is like a kennel with the option of perch and room for scratch pad…I always use a plastic carrier which is easily cleaned and has enough room for a blanket or towel inside…
Although I only ever take my cats on short trips to the vets, or from shelters etc to my home in such a carrier so I think maybe these would not be suitable for a journey to the airport followed by a flight…I’m guessing you wish for your pets to have a bit more room than a standard carrier would provide…
Standard carriers: http://www.dabners.co.uk/subcategory-46-1-cat-carriers.html

A roomier carrier would be http://www.ok-pet.com/dog_cat_carrier.htm option ZSY-H01 which I think, as it is taller you could hook up a hammock inside so your cat has somewhere off the floor to rest….

Also I think you should make sure that the airline approves of the type of carrier before you purchase as some airlines have strict codes on such things.
Hope it helps.
Have a great flight!!
Comfort for cats on a flight is security. You shouldn’t (and possibly aren’t allowed to by the airline) put them in large cages. They should have enough room to stand and turn around. That’s it. If there is turbulence they can get knocked around and injured in larger cages. Also remember to make sure they are in the hold and not baggage. Sometimes baggage isn’t heated and could be cold. Good luck on your move!
You won’t have that kind of space in a crate. You can get some small cardboard scratching things for cats that you could cut down. A shelf could be dangerous if the crate were to move suddenly during thransport on and off the plane or in a car.
A larger dog carrier with some blankets and food and water bowls (you can get ones that attach on the inside) should be enough for travel.
I would worry about actually being able to take 5 cats in separate carriers on a plane. Most airlines have a limit on the number or crates and animals allowed per flight. You may be able to put 2 in each crate and have 1 in the cabin with you. There is usually a maximum size for the crate, but as long as it is less than that, you can get the biggest crates you can afford. Check with the airline you are flying for their rules on pets flying.
If the flight is not too long, and you get the cats used to the carries, it should not be an issue.
Crates are used for travel and generally not for long term confinement. The cages you may have seen for cats at a shelter are for them to be in basically all day with some play time.
Georgia to Arkansas isn’t that far; why not drive them? They will be much more comfortable.
We moved my 2 cats, 2 dogs and 2 birds in the horse trailer. Everybody had their own big dog crate, the cats had litter boxes and their curl up cup beds and water in a small bucket bungied to the door of the cage. We started out with the cats in the car, and they yelled so much we couldn’t stand it. They really liked it better in the horse trailer; it was dark and they seemed to like that–maybe they felt like they were hiding.
We went from Kansas to southern Florida in 2 days. It wasn’t fun, but so much better than flying!
