Do feral cats go away for a long period of time and then come back?

You do not have a feral cat, they are wild and fend for themselves. They go where they want when they want. Yes they go for long periods of time.
My neighbors had a feral cat for 3 years, and he often left for a few days and always came back. Once he was gone for almost a month before he came back. Their other feral cats also would leave for a while and eventually come back, but they don’t do it as often now that they are older.
Yes they sometimes do. However with a cat of this age, I am afraid my guess is that something else may have happened. Has it ever strayed for so long before? If it has then it is POSSIBLE it still is loitering somewhere else. I think the running away for periods of time happen mostly when they are much younger though. Cats are strange thinking creatures. Sometimes there is no reasonable explaination for what they choose to do.
Had a young mother cat under two years who just DISAPPEARED for two years. She was my son’s pet and treated VERY well…but just disappeared and we ASSUMED she had met with an untimely death.
Two years later I was sleeping and heard a ‘bump’ at the door. Got up to check it out and when I opened the door IN CAME THE CAT…no time for ‘a reunion’ of happiness….she went STRAIGHT to my bedroom closet and had four kittens within an hour!
Guess she knew who would take ‘good care’ of her offspring!
Blessings and HOPE your ‘friend’ comes home.’

The smart feral cats around here disappear when the migratory geese come through in the Fall. That’s because the coyotes move in with the geese. These cats ‘go away’ for about three weeks and then return.
Last Fall they got their schedule mixed up and the colony was decimated by the coyotes. The mating pair and a few others survived but they have become very secretive and we rarely see them around these days. We haven’t been able to trap them this year for their shots.
