my cat litter has been smelling really bad lately. I haven’t changed their food or litter the only thing that is different is we are having a heat wave. Could the heat maje their litter smell worse?

Just like humans can become dehydrated in the hot weather, so can our pets. If your cat is dehydrated then her urine is going to be more concentrated — thus the stroger oder.
Make sure you have fresh cool water out for your cat and try to encourage her to drink. Cats can also get more water intake if you feed her wet canned food instead of just dry kibble.

I’m sure the heat doesn’t help, especially if you don’t have air conditioning. Does the litter smell bad before you even put it into their litter box? Does the litter look different?
Yes – heat makes liquids evaporate. The moisture from their pee and poop is probably evaporating more rapidly and more smell molecules are in the air. The humidity is probably also causing it to linger.
Your best bet is to clean the litterbox more often, like twice per day.
yes if your house is hot also. it will make the urine smell worse. you can always put baking soda in the litter to absorb the smell or get that cat litter baking soda they sell
Clean litter often. Clean the litter box when you change litter. An unclean litter box or waste matters under high temperature condition will cause bacteria to grow and create foul odors.
it could defanatly be the heat wave. just make sure the box stays clean and you might want to try a different litter. because if the litter smells too bad you might worry about the kittens going else where

Try to add some baking soda, get a big Cosco bag if you have a membership and mix it in.

absolutely. Use something like Tidycat because that cheap fullers earth stuff is excellent for making a mud facial with, but useless for cat litter.
If you have a feed store near by, try using chicken feed as your cat litter. You need to get the kind called "crumbles for laying chickens". It works great for litter and is alot cheaper than litter from the store. It is made from corn, the corn absorbs the smell and it also clumps when wet. I only pay about $11.00 for a 50 lb bag.
