Can I use a cat litter tray for my dog?
I live in an apartment so it isn’t very convenient for me to go outside to let my puppy go to the toilet every hour or so. Does anyone know if it’s ok to use a cat litter tray for my puppy? Or can anyone give me any advice?

yes, definitely….
i toilet trained my pup that way…. i also lived in an apartment at that time so i understand your situation. it takes time though, and don’t put the litter near where he sleeps as dogs don’t like to go to the toilet where they sleep…. good luck with your new pup…
You shouldn’t have gotten a puppy if you’re too lazy to housebreak it. Get off your behind. Walk the puppy. They don’t go every hour.
no
You should try to get a pet loo. It is like having grass inside. You can wash the turf, and empltying is just picking up the solids or emptying the jug from underneath. I have one of these and they are very effective. Dogs just think it is a bit of outside on the inside.
I actually disagree with sniffydogs comments. Puppies can go to the toilet 8-10 times in a day. I work during the day, so I can’t keep running home to take my dog for a walk. It has nothing to do with laziness. I walk Archie first thing in the morning, and then we go for 1/2 an hour to an hour in the evening, but if needs to go when I am not at home, then I have trained him to use the Pet Loo.
It seems strange that everyone got a thumbs down except sniffydog and she got a thumbs up. Coincedence?
its called training … take the time to bring him out, or dont own a dog. If you use litter you’ll only confuse him
They sell litter trays for dogs. They’re a lot bigger.
Yes, My parents trained their dogs to potty on pee pads and news paper but later on my mom decided to buy a potty tray at the pet store so now she just lines it with news papers. She has 5 Pekingese and they all go potty in potty trays. It’s much easier to clean up than having to scrub the floor all the time from news papers being on the floor. Make sure to praise and reward your puppy when it has pottied in the correct place. Keep potty area away from the puppy food and sleeping area because dogs do not like to potty in those areas but then who would? Be consistent & good luck!
Yes you can train a small dog to use newspapers laid on the floor, or go in a tray. Just take it there when it wants to go, and praise it and give it a treat. In a few weeks it will be trained to go there (but won’t cover up its business like a cat would do). Make sure the tray is large enough or there will be a horrible mess all over.
It would hurt to try? Its not gonna poison your dog or anything.lol Go for it, worst case scenario, the dog just dont want to use it.
yes i believe you can or you could train him to go on a puppy pad to start till he isnt going every hour so you only have to take him out every few hours and its alot easyer to clean up.
I had the same problem and litter box doesn’t really work, at least not for my puppy he just played with it and got the stuff stuck in his nose. There are things called puppy pads, or training pads that I use and are for puppies. They work but still try and take your puppy out as much as possible especially if its a boy and you decide not to fix him. ; )
I’ve heard people have trained their toy dogs to go in litter trays and it sounds ideal – as long as your dog is the right size! I tried to do it with my Boston when he was a puppy, but he just ended up eating the litter and peeing elsewhere!
In the end I crate trained him and he was pretty much toilet trained in a few weeks. I crated him if i was away or unable to watch him (but no longer than 4 hrs at a time) and he never did his business in there. So when I took him out he was busting to go! I took him outside and he just did a wee there and I had a command (‘Hurry up’) and treat ready when he did. If I was gone for longer I had a little safe play area for him and a puppy pad so he could go there – but to be honest, if anything it retarded the training a bit.
Now Oscar can urinate on command! He can’t poo on command, but then, neither can I. I have a yard now, but have had no accidents since he was a puppy back in my apartment. AND he’s crate trained for planes etc, so doesnt go crazy if he needs to be in one.
Just be patient but vigilant and you’ll get there.
Hi I found a dog igloo very handy
