I built my own...you can design it any way you want to and use whatever you want to cover it (carpet, rope, etc) and you can make it whatever size you want it...plus, it is actually CHEAPER to build your own. I built my cat tree back in 2005 and i recently moved and it held up pretty good - the only thing that happened is the carpet fibers got wet and started falling off so all I have to do is go to walmart and buy a $5 carpet and attach it and it's back to new! and my cats aren't little kittens that play nicely. I have two Bengals one 12 lbs the other 15 lbs and they will run full speed and jump onto it and hang on the side of it and bite it and scratch at it, they really LOVE their cat tree and it makes me feel good knowing that I made it for THEM.

We would always build our own. I don't know if you are opposed to that but it is significantly cheaper. All you really need are things like 2x4s, thick cardboard tubes, plywood and carpet. We went to a carpet store and bought a pretty large piece of crap carpet that they only had a little bit left of. They basically gave it to us for free, since they couldn't get rid of it. Consider doing this if are fairly handy with tools. They aren't too hard and then you get to customize them.

The best scratching posts are made by Felix Catnip Tree in Seattle.

They are about 3 ft tall, on a sturdy wood base, and covered with sisal, with some catnip under it. They are around $50 and worth every penny.

It's a small family owned business. You can google them for contact information. I have been using these for 20 years or more, my cats love them and they are fairly durable. They keep the cats away from scratching other things because they love the feel of the sisal. I have many cats and can say with confidence that they get the cat seal of approval.

We built ours as well. We used 2x4's, a sheet of OSB, wood screws, carpet, and sissal rope. It ended up being a monster condo/tree/climbing thing that my cat LOVED!!! Total cost was less than 40 dollars. We used free carpet we found online, bought lumber and screws from Home Depot, and sissal from Walmart. We did not use any glue, just wood screws and staples.

Alas, when we moved, it was too big to take with us. A previous neighbor offered 60 dollars for it. We gave it to her free ;)

Armarkat.com has some really reasonable tree houses that are pretty cool. A treehouse should be a minimum of 4 or 5 feet tall - the little ones don't last and are a waste of money.
