The breed does not matter. The dog needs to be well trained or you could end up with a dead cat. Do an introduction to see how everyone gets along. Do not leave them alone until you know it is safe. The dog should not chase the cat or bark, he should be calm and respond to your commands 100% of the time.

Depends more on how well trained your dogs are and if they are cat friendly or cat aggressive to strange cats that might be outside.

If your dogs really are cat friendly, I'd recommend getting a Maine Coon type or a Bengal type - something that is larger (14+ lbs) to be safer around your dogs.

Like the first poster said, the breed of the cat has nothing to do with it. And my opinion, the breed of the dog doesn't either. (I hate how people catagorize pitbulls and their mixes like they're a whole other species...it's a DOG.)

I would go to a shelter. They test cats with dogs there, to see if the cats are ok with the dogs. So at least you can get a cat that's ok with dogs. What I did when I brought my dog home was make sure the cats had one room (blocked off with a baby gate) that they could get away from the dog in. The dog appeared to be used to cats (she was dumped in a parking lot, so we don't know her history), and only one of my cats hid in a closet for three months, so I consider it a win-win. They were able to "meet" each other through the baby gate and no one even tried to hurt each other.
