This morning, my cat attacked a father mocking bird that was defending his nest. My little sister took him in, because he couldn’t fly, and she put him in our cat’s carrier. When I woke up, I moved him into our cockatoo’s old cage(which is huge) and I put in bedding(care fresh) and I took off the wire thing on the bottom so he could rest on something comfy. I put in wild bird seed from our bird feeder in both the regular food dish, and a bowl at the bottom, and clean water. He has a somewhat deep wound under his wing, that was bleeding a little, not gushing blood like you’d think it would be. He took a bath, and drank some water, he just didn’t eat any bird seed. Just recently, he flew up to a perch, and that’s where he’s sitting now. Well since he can fly, should I release him back into the wild, even with the wound? Can’t he recover in his home, as well as he could recover with me? Will the mother be able to care for babies with out him until he recovers? Is there anything I can do for the wound, like put gauze on in, and some hydrogen peroxide? I’m not sure if I should let him go, or help him heal, and if I do keep him, how do I care for a wild bird, am I doing everything so far right? Right now, he’s in the same room as my cockatoos, they’re all just chirping to eachother. Please help!
I put the birds nest in the tree in my outdoor aviary while the mother was out hunting, and I put the father in the aviary too, he tended to the nest immediately, the mother came back and looked cofused, she heard them chirping and flew straight into the aviary, and I closed the door. They don’t seem to mind it in there, and haven’t tried to get out, it’s really big and their old nesting tree is just outside the aviary. I went to the pet store and bought live crickets and mealworms for them to eat, plus I found some worms under rocks and put them in there too. I’m taking the bird to the vet in a few hours, and if he does end up healing and surviving, I found a wild bird sancuarie that will take him and the family.
